I am a fan of word games and so it is only fitting that my first review be on one. There are many different word games on the Android Market, and most of them are very good. The one I am focusing on today is called Word Up. It is a take on the classic Boggle word game.
The object of the game is to find as many words as possibel before your time runs out. It seems straight forward, but there is a twist. The screen isn't your normal mixed letters at the bottom. It is set up as a grid and you can connect the letters in any pattern as long as you don't skip a letter. Just place your finger on the first letter of the word and pass it across the other letters in the word until you have reached the last one. Once you raise your finger, the word is registered or denied. You cannot use proper nouns, slang, euphemisms and words with apostrophes.
If you get stuck, you can tap the menu button and rotate the board. This will rotate the game board 90 degrees clockwise. This gives you a slightly different perspective on the letters and you may be able to discover a few more words that way.
The scoring is calculated depending on the size of the word.
Three letters = 1 point
Four letters = 1 point
Five letters = 2 points
Six letters = 3 points
Seven letters = 5 popints
Eight or more letters = 11 points
Once the game is over, you can view all of the possible words from the board. This is helpful because you will have these words in the back of your mind for the next game. The more you play the more words you are able to find. The only problem with this is that you get better and better so your high score gets higher and higher. It becomes increasingly more difficult to beat yourself.
If this becomoes a problem for you, you may want to try the mulit player mode. This will allow you to pass the game to another player after your time runs out. They will then have the same amount of time to find as many words as possible on the same game board you just finished. You can play up to four players in this mode.
You can also increase or decrease the difficulty. You can have a Beginner 3X3 board, a Standard 4X4 board, a Master board 5X5 or an Expert board 6X6. It is entertaining in standard mode and much more challenging (to the point of being frustrating) when you move up to Master or Expert.
One last way to adjust the difficulty level is by changing the time. You can choose 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes or unlimited. Obviously, the less time you give yourself, the more challenging the game will be.
Overall, this is one of the most fun word games I have played on my Android phone. I recommend you try it out. Let us know your thoughts on this game below.
